Verify SBS 2003 is running the most recent service packs.

1. To verify that your server is running Service Pack 1 for Windows Small Business Server 2003.

  • Start the Registry Editor, and then locate the following registry entry:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SmallBusinesServer\ServicePackNumber
  • If the value is 0×00000001, Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows SBS 2003 is installed. Close the Registry Editor.

2. Verify that your server is running Service Pack 2 for Windows Server 2003.

3. Verify that your server is running Service Pack 2 for Exchange Server 2003.

4. Verify that your server is running Service Pack 3 for Windows SharePoint Services 2.0

  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.
  • Click Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2.0, and then click Click here for support information. If the version number is 11.0.8173.0, SP3 for Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 is installed.

5. Verify that Service Pack 1 for Microsoft Core XML Services (MSXML) 6.0 is installed

  • On the Source Server, verify that MSXML6.dll is version 6.10.1129.0 or higher. MSXML6.dll is in the %SystemDrive%:\Windows\System32 folder.

6. Verify that .NET Framework 2.0 is installed.

7. Raise the functional level of the source domain and the forest to Windows Server 2003.

8. Prep SBS 2003 Server for migration.

  • Insert the SBS 2008 DVD into the SBS 2003 Server.
  • Browse to the Tools Folder and run SourceTool.exe.
  • Click – I have a backup – Click Next.
  • The existing domain will be updated with the SBS 2008 requirements.

  • Reboot the SBS 2003 Server.

9. Account used to do the migration must be a member of “Enterprise Admins, Schema Admins, and Domain Admins”.

10. Create SBS 2008 Answer file.

  • Insert Windows SBS 2008 DVD into the SBS 2003 Server.
  • Navigate to the Tools folder, and then double-click SBSAfg.exe.
  • Select Migration from Existing Server.
  • (Optional) Set the correct time zone.
  • Uncheck “Trial Security Services”.
  • Enter the remaining information and Click Save As.
  • Save the answer file to the root of a removable device, like a USB drive.

11. Start the SBS 2008 install.

  • Insert the SBS 2008 DVD.
  • Insert the removable device with the .xml answer file.
  • Power on the server.

Click Next.

Click Install Now.

Enter the Product Key and Click Next.

Accept the terms and Click Next.

Select Custom.

Load storage drivers if required.

Configure HD Partitions.

Click Next.

Install process begins. Wait. . .

Server will reboot and continue setup.

Installation finishes.

12. Starting the Migration Wizard.

  • Note: Migration must be finished within 21 Days or the SBS 2003 will shut itself down. ng>
  • Log into the SBS 2008 server as an administrator other than the Built-in Administrator account. The migration wizard will not run if logged in as the Built-in Administrator.

Click Start the Migration Wizard.

Click Next.

Click Next.

First task in the Migration Wizard is the option to change where the User Data, Exchange Data, and SharePoint Data will be stored.

Change the Data location based on your server setup.

 

Select Configure the Network.

Click Next.

Click Start Connect to Internet Wizard.

Click Next.

Disable DHCP on SBS 2003 Server. Click Continue.

Note: You will need to manually transfer any DHCP reservations.

Enter Default Gateway IP and Enter SBS 2008 IP.

Click Next.

Click Next.

Click Next.

Click Next. Configure the Network is finished.

Click Finish

 

Select Configure Internet address.

Click Next.

Click Start Internet Address Management Wizard.

Click Next.

Select if you need to purchase a domain name or if you already own one.

Click Next.

Select how you want to manage your domain name.

Click Next.

Enter your external DNS domain name.

(Optional) Click Advanced settings to change the domain prefix to something besides “remote”.

Click Configure.

Select Task Complete

Click Next.

 

Select Migrate network settings.

Click Next.

Click Migrate DNS Forwards and Mobile User Group.

Select Task Complete.

Follow the steps in the provided links for:

  • Migrate Exchange Mailboxes and Settings. Optional: (Follow this blog entry starting at Public Folder Replication)
  • Remove Legacy Group Policies and Logon Settings.
  • Migrate Users’ Shared Data.
  • Migrate SharePoint Web site.

 

Select Migrate Fax Data

Click Next.

Select Click to start migration your fax data.

Select Task Complete.

Click Next.

 

Select Migrate Users and Groups.

Click Next.

Follow the Display the security group migration instructions to display the groups in the SBS console.

Click Next.

Click Run the Change User Role Wizard.

Assign User Roles to fit your users.

Click Cancel when finished.

Select Task Complete.

Click Next.

Select Finish Migration.

Click Next.

Select Finish the migration.

Click Next.

Follow the instructions to demote the SBS 2003 server.

Select the Source Server is no longer a DC.

Click Next.

Migration to SBS 2008 is Finished.

Click Finish.
